Choose a Cloud Storage class with retention math

Compare Cloud Storage classes using retention days, expected retrieval, operation volume, location, and early-deletion risk.

Select from retention and retrieval evidence

Cloud Storage class selection is a scenario calculation. Google documents class-specific storage, operations, retrieval, and minimum-duration conditions. Record how long objects actually remain, how much is read, and whether a lifecycle rule deletes or transitions data before the relevant period.

For 1,000 GiB retained 120 days, calculate about four GiB-months per GiB, then add expected retrieval and operations for each class. If objects are deleted at day 20, include the applicable early-deletion condition rather than using only the lower monthly storage number. Current rates and conditions come from Google’s pricing table.

Use the Cloud Storage Class Comparison Calculator only for us-central1 capacity comparison; it excludes retrieval and minimum-duration charges. Validate a policy on measured bucket prefixes before broad rollout.

FAQ

Can one bucket use multiple classes?

Yes, storage class is an object property; use lifecycle rules carefully with the documented conditions.
