Choose a Cloud Storage class from retention and retrieval behavior rather than its storage rate alone.

Compare total expected access cost

Cloud Storage classes are a retention-and-access decision. Google pricing varies by storage class and location, and certain classes introduce retrieval fees and minimum storage durations. A lower GiB-month rate can cost more when data is read frequently or deleted early.

Take a hypothetical archive of 10,000 GiB retained for six months. For each candidate class, calculate storage quantity as 10,000 × 6 GiB-months, then add expected retrieval GiB, Class A and B operations, early-deletion exposure, and egress. A class with the lowest storage subtotal wins only if these extra quantities remain small.

Classify objects by observed access: hot application assets, occasional backups, compliance archives, and uncertain data should not necessarily share one policy. Test lifecycle rules on a bucket prefix and check actual retrieval before applying it across a data estate. Location and replication choices remain separate drivers.
