EKS cluster consolidation: estimate fixed fees and limits

More clusters add a recurring control-plane component
A multi-cluster design can provide useful operational separation, but each billable cluster contributes its own fee. For small environments, fixed cluster charges can be visible even when workload compute is modest.
Compare only alternatives that meet the same isolation and availability requirements. Namespace organization and a separate cluster are not interchangeable security or failure boundaries merely because one has a smaller cost subtotal.
Worked example: five environments versus two clusters
Suppose five billable clusters each operate for a 730-hour planning month. They consume 3,650 cluster-hours. A hypothetical valid design with two clusters consumes 1,460 cluster-hours.
The difference is 2,190 × the applicable cluster-hour price. If the total worker fleet is unchanged, this is the entire modeled reduction in the cluster-and-worker subtotal. Do not also claim worker savings unless the new scheduling design actually lowers billable worker-hours.
If consolidation reduces eight workers to six at the same hourly rate and runtime, that separate scenario removes 1,460 worker-hours. Record it as a measured or justified capacity assumption rather than an automatic consequence of reducing cluster count.
Consider upgrade and ownership costs
Shared clusters can couple teams’ upgrades, policies, and incident response. Separate clusters can simplify some boundaries while increasing repeated administration. Keep these operational effects explicit, especially when the fixed fee is small relative to engineering time.
Check every cluster’s support status. A delayed version upgrade can change the control-plane rate. The calculator supports its documented fee choices, but it does not forecast your upgrade schedule or determine whether a workload is compatible with a new version.
The subtotal excludes volumes, load balancers, NAT, logs, transfer, and other resources. Consolidation may change those independently, so an environment-level comparison should include the actual dependencies on each side.

Does putting multiple teams in one cluster always save money? It can reduce some fixed fees, but worker requirements and operational consequences may offset that reduction.
Can I use standard support pricing forever? No. Check the version’s support status and your planned upgrade timing when projecting future months.
