Unused EBS volumes: estimate savings before removing storage

Unused application space is not automatically avoidable storage
EBS storage billing follows provisioned capacity. An unattached volume may be unnecessary, but it may also contain required data or be part of a recovery workflow. Estimate the carrying cost before deciding whether to resize, migrate, retain, or remove it.
The gp3 calculator can quantify its supported storage-and-IOPS subtotal. It cannot determine whether a volume is safe to delete, whether a snapshot is sufficient, or whether an application can use a smaller disk.
Worked example: a volume inventory
Suppose an inventory identifies ten 100 GB gp3 volumes that are candidates for retirement. Together they represent 1,000 GB of provisioned capacity. If they have no additional provisioned IOPS above the included baseline, the modeled monthly storage subtotal is 1,000 × the per-GB-month rate.
After owner review, only six volumes are confirmed unnecessary. The supported avoidable capacity is then 600 GB, not the original 1,000 GB. Use that verified quantity for the potential storage saving.
If retention requires snapshots, their ongoing expense belongs in a separate line. A snapshot policy can reduce or shift storage cost, but it does not make preserved data free. These examples describe capacity arithmetic and deliberately avoid assuming a compression or snapshot-size ratio.
Review before taking action
Identify the resource owner, attachment history, data purpose, and recovery requirements. Confirm that the replacement backup can be restored and that retention expectations are met. An unattached state by itself does not establish that a volume is disposable.
For an oversized attached volume, assess an application-appropriate migration rather than assuming a destructive capacity change is possible or safe in place. Include temporary overlap while old and replacement storage coexist.
The calculator excludes snapshots, additional throughput, transfer, and operational migration effort. Its annual figure repeats the same monthly assumption, so count only the months the resource would otherwise remain provisioned.

Can I treat every unattached volume as waste? No. Confirm ownership and recovery needs first; the cost estimate supports that review but does not replace it.
