Why small churn changes can move estimated LTV sharply

Why is LTV sensitive to churn?

In this calculator, monthly churn is the denominator. Holding revenue and margin fixed, a lower churn assumption increases modeled LTV nonlinearly. A small-looking percentage-point change can therefore create a large change in the output.

Run a sensitivity table

Assume $150 monthly revenue per customer and 80% gross margin. The modeled monthly gross profit is $120. Use the same revenue and margin for each illustrative run:

Moving from 4% to 3% raises the estimate by one-third, even though the input changes by only one percentage point. Moving from 3% to 2% raises it by one-half. That sensitivity is arithmetic, not a forecast that a retention initiative will deliver those gains.

Tie assumptions to observations

If a cohort starts with 100 customers, one additional cancellation changes observed churn by a full percentage point. Such a small cohort can produce a volatile LTV estimate. Keep the starting customer count and cancellation count beside the percentage so reviewers can assess the evidence behind it.

Compare several periods and customer segments before choosing a planning input. Do not replace an unfavorable month with a favorable one simply because it produces a larger acquisition budget. A transparent range is more informative than an unexplained precise value.

Questions about retention scenarios

Can I use revenue churn in this formula?

The tool is defined around monthly customer churn. Revenue churn may include different effects and can behave differently, especially with expansion. Keep the metric consistent with the model rather than silently substituting one for the other.

Is the best-case LTV my maximum CAC?

No. LTV excludes acquisition spending and does not show the timing of its recovery. Check CAC and payback separately, leaving the risk assumptions visible. The sensitivity table shows how uncertain retention affects value; it does not prescribe a spending limit.
